Cryptocurrency and the Math of Energy, Entropy and Free Energy

  • What is your name?
  • What is your email address?
  • What are your affiliations, as you would like them to be listed?
  • What picture can we use for you?
  • What kind of session are you proposing to do? Live streamed panel or group session (30 to 90 minutes)
  • What is the title of your presentation or session?
    • Cryptocurrency and the Math of Energy, Entropy and Free Energy
  • How does this relate to the theme of Applying Active Inference?
    • Cryptocurrency is transforming the financial industry. The new currencies Qi and Quai link energy and entropy, which suggests analyzing them in terms of free energy and Active Inference.
  • What other sub-themes does your work connect with?
    • Interpreting the mathematics of energy, entropy and free energy offers scientific rigor as well as insights from physics, chemistry, Active Inference and other perspectives.
  • If you would like to do a live online session, what time range would work for you? Please provide some preferred UTC times between 16 UTC on Nov. 12, and 20 UTC on Nov. 14, and we will find a time that is convenient for you.
  • What is the Abstract for your session? Up to 300 words, this will be the description of your session in the program. Please include details of interactive aspects, if relevant.

This three-part panel analyzes the concepts of energy, entropy and free energy as relevant for economy, society and ecology, and specifically, for cryptocurrency. Steph Macurdy, Head of Research at Wolfram Blockchain Labs, envisages a planetary economy based on cryptocurrency. He discusses a new system of two currencies, Qi and Quai, where Qi reflects the cost of energy and Quai grows in value with respect to Qi. Qi and Quai are emitted through Proof-of-Work, which expresses entropy. The connection with energy and entropy suggests analyzing Qi and Quai in terms of free energy and Active Inference. In the second part, Andrius Kulikauskas, Math 4 Wisdom, PhD in Math, BA in Physics, presents the mathematics of the Free Energy Principle and Active Inference. He interprets this math in terms of thermodynamics, as well as the customary Bayesian narrative, where Q(x) approximates P(x,y), but also an alternative narrative, where P(x,y) and Q(x) are two systems in dialogue, as with System 1 and System 2 in experimental psychology. In the final part, we brainstorm about the meaning of energy, entropy and free energy. Panel members include Luca Possati, Assistant Professor in Philosophy of Technology, Marcus Petz, PhD in Social and Public Policy, and Peter Thestrup Waade, who is defending his PhD in Computational Cognitive Science. Throughout our panel we welcome questions and insights from our audience.

  • Optional: What logistical needs might your session need? E.g. if it is a panel, who else will be invited? If it is a workshop, what can we do to support it?
  • Optional: What are you excited about in Active Inference?
  • Optional: What ways might you like to see the field grow and develop?
  • Optional: What organizations should we reach out to, for partnership or sponsorship?
  • Any additional requirements or questions?
